Don't be afraid... just give it a listen!

Small manila envelopes

by Jennifer Nigro, Coordinator of Volunteers

The small manila envelopes are back!  For those of you who aren’t familiar with these packets that magically appear with your reading material, they contain a CD of your reading for you to listen to and critique.  I’ll be listening to the same recording on my own time and making notes as well.  Then we talk about what we heard.

I know what you’re thinking—"I HATE to listen to myself."  I know you do.  But there are THOUSANDS of people out there who LIKE to listen to you—and we want to keep it that way!  Doing a spot-check like this from time to time helps us catch any problems before they get out of hand.  But the best part is they allow me to give you a pat on the back and tell you what you’re doing RIGHT.

I’ve followed the self-evaluation/evaluation format for the last several years, in varying forms.  That said someone suggested to me this year a peer-review format.  It’s something other radio reading services utilize.  It would give you the opportunity to give constructive feedback to a fellow reader, and receive feedback from a fellow reader in return, rather than evaluating your own work.  If this is something you’d like to try, let me know.  We can get a pool of willing participants together, trade recordings and see what happens!

Regardless of which way you choose to receive feedback about your work, please note this is in no way designed to make anyone feel inadequate.  It’s simply a way for all of us to ensure our listeners are getting the very best product possible.  After all, that’s why we’re here, right?

Condolences

We ex-

tend our condolences to Audio-Reader volunteer Jack Schroeder, whose wife Dorothy died January 30. Many of us got to know Dorothy through Audio-Reader social events, and she will be missed terribly.

We also offer our condolences to volunteer Katie Bartkoski, whose grandmother died in January. Jack and Katie, may you and your families receive comfort from your memories and all the support you receive from family and friends.

Volunteer to appear at Lawrence Arts Center

Audio-Reader volunteer Dean Bevan will play the part of Sigmund Freud in a reading of a new play called Let My Mind Flash with Blades, February 12 at 2 p.m. in the black box theatre at the Lawrence Arts Center. The play chronicles Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis of the American poet Hilda Doolittle.

Plea for red pens!!

Hey Vol-

un-

teers! If you have a stash of the red marker type pens from Audio-Reader in the bottom of your purse or filling your junk drawer please bring them back. They aren't the best pens for home use but perfect for marking newspapers.  Pentel sign pen is the brand. Thanks!!!

Picture Perfect

A Theatre Lawrence prod-

uction in January featured staff and volunteers from Audio-Reader. The play was entitled Bloody Murder. Outreach Coordinator Peggy Sampson played the part of Jane, Audio-Reader volunteer Jeff Blair was the Assistant Director and Audio-Reader volunteer Jane Pennington was the costumer. The play ran on January 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28 and 29 of January to sold-out crowds. Congratulations to all of our Theatre Lawrence stars!
