From the Director's Desk
by Janet Campbell, Director I’m fairly new to social networking and have to admit that I am finding it very fascinating – in fact – addicting! My network of choice is Facebook. For those of you unfamiliar with it, basically it’s a web site where you build a profile of yourself and then add friends and groups (such as Audio-Reader, KU and KPR). Whenever you post a comment or a friend posts a comment it appears on your home page. I would consider myself more of a snoop or lurker than an active poster. I have probably posted a message or picture that has gone to all of my friends less than 10 times. To put that in perspective, I have Facebook friends that post 10 or more times a day! It’s fascinating to read about your friends’ daily, often mundane lives. Here are a couple of examples of recent posts from my FBF (that’s Facebook friends): " had a good night, I am so tired though, I need a nap and I just got up" and, "who knew that looking out the window and seeing grass would be so uplifting." Granted, not riveting reading, but you do get hooked and keep going back for more. During the Christmas season this year when many of us were literally house bound, I spent countless hours on Facebook reading how my friends were coping with the snow and the cold. It got almost funny to read all of the complaining and moaning about not being able to go anywhere or do anything since the snow paralyzed us. Thankfully there was a large group of Audio-Reader staff and volunteers who didn’t let the weather stop them. Instead of posting and reading on Facebook, these volunteers were traipsing through the snow to get to A-R to read, and many were still able to do their Telephone Reader recordings from home. Even though the newspapers were not delivered on Christmas Day, I am proud to say that Lori was here and was able to print enough of the newspapers from the Internet to provide material for the volunteers to read. I hesitate listing all the volunteers’ names in fear of omitting someone, but you know who you are and I just want to say thank you! I’ve talked with enough listeners to know that the holidays can be a very lonely time, and having those voices bring them the news is very comforting. Once again, Audio-Reader volunteers proved that they are the best! No matter what Mother Nature throws at you, your service continues and reminds us that you are amazing. Social Networking? I don’t think you need it – you are already networked in to what’s important. But if you ever join Facebook, be sure and ‘friend me’. I’d be proud to have you on my list. |
